Hitting the Juice again...

Some of my friends may recall me posting about exploring the Mean Green Juice from the movie "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead" about this time, last year.  Well, I'm going to commit to do it again - for at least 30 days.  While posting the information for the Physical Detox on my website, I got to thinking it had been over a year since I had last gone through the detox myself.  So I've order the supplements to begin that process and decided to do the juicing at the same time - a great way to REALLY clean out the gut and reboot my immune system and facilitate healing.

The recipe is as follows:

  • 3-4 Celery stalks
  • 5-6 Kale leaves
  • 2 Apples
  • 1/2 Lemon
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1" of Ginger
  • and I add  about 1/2 cup of fresh pineapple

Throw it all together in the juicer and I have about 2 servings of green juice.  I store 1 serving in a small glass jar with a lid and drink the other serving right away.

Why is this juice, and specifically this combination of fruits/vegetables, good for you?  The specific combinations of fruits and veggies in this juice have helpful synergy.  For example, consuming a vitamin C rich food like apple and lemon at the same time as a plant-based iron source, like kale, can help our body absorb more of the iron.

Cucumbers contain an anti-inflammatory flavonol called fisetin that appears to play an important role in brain health. In addition to improving your memory and protecting your nerve cells from age-related decline, fisetin has been found to prevent progressive memory and learning impairments in mice with Alzheimer's disease. Cucumbers also help fight cancer, helps relieve stress, supports your digestion and heart health.

Ginger:

Ginger reduces pain and  inflammation. It improves digestion and helps fight cold and flu. It helps prevent colon cancer, fights respiratory infections,  and strengthens your immunity.

Apples:

Recent studies on apples show they could keep Alzheimer’s away and fight the effects of aging on the brain. The American Association for Cancer Research, among others, agree that the consumption of flavonol-rich apples could help reduce your risk of developing pancreatic cancer by up to 23 per cent. Apples decrease your risk of diabetes. reduce cholesterol, resolve irritable-bowel syndrome, detoxify your liver, boost heart health and improve your immune system.

Lemons:

Lemons help alkaline your body's PH, they are very rich in vitamin C, help detoxify your liver, cleans out your bowels, neutralize free radicals linked to ageing and most type of disease, and contain 22 anti-cancer compounds.

Pineapple:

Pineapples so are rich in antioxidants which fight free radicals and prevent cell damage, rich in manganese which strengthen bones, is an anti-inflammatory, has anti-cancer properties and is fantastic for heart, digestion and immunity health.

I'm excited to see how I will feel over the next 30 days.  I will be sure to keep ya'll posted on my progress.!
